Oman's hidden treasure: Alila Jabal Akhdar

Perched at an incredible 200m above sea level, at the edge of a ravine, Alila Jabal Akhdar was voted as one of the ‘top 10 instagrammable hotels in 2017’ by Time Magazine. Set in one of Oman’s most mysterious and compelling regions, Jabal Akhdar, literally meaning ‘The Green Mountain’ in Arabic, the resort provides guests with awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping views of the Al Hajar mountains.

This spectacular resort opened its doors in 2014, attracting romantics, adventure travellers along with those just looking for an escape with a view. Alila Hotels are famous for the ‘Alila experience’, promising to enhance guests’ experience during their stay by guiding them in their exploration of the surrounding area, focusing on five themes, tailored to the individual’s interests; ‘Cultural Learning (love of history and artisanship), Conscious Living (wellness, environs and community), Active Spirits (outdoor sporting pursuits), Culinary Arts (cooking school and food trails) and Couple Celebration.’

Oman has an incredibly diverse history and culture, and historic enthusiasts can take advantage of the close proximity of a number of heritage sites in the surrounding cities of Nizwa, Bahla, and Ebri, including the UNESCO Heritage site Bahla Fort.

Once done exploring, guests can retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life and enjoy the peaceful solitude of the resort. Guests can escape the enveloping heat of the desert whilst still taking advantage of the Mediterranean climate, which aides the growth of Oman’s famous damask roses, which decorate many of the rooms throughout the hotel.

The hotel features 78 suites, ranging from Mountain View rooms, to two, two-bedroom villas with private pool. Guests can dine inside the main restaurant, Juniper, or al fresco if they wish. The menu is a mix of traditional Arabic dishes and international cuisine, and the included breakfast is a well-stocked buffet. Drinks, light bites and snacks are available in the Rose Lounge.

A large infinity pool offers stunning panoramic views of the mountains, and there are also two whirlpool tubs; an indoor pool; a fitness centre; and a spa, with a range of treatments available. Guests can enjoy morning yoga sessions on certain days of the week, as well as a weekly ‘under the stars’ meditation. Bikes are available for guests to take out if they wish. And of course, free WiFi is available throughout the resort, should guests want to posts photos to make those at home full of envy.
